Masters Thesis

I used a mixed-method approach to contrast the roles of urban community farms and community gardens in the urban ecosystem and the food justice movement. The research utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and an online survey to compare food access and crop diversity of urban community gardens versus urban community farms in the San Francisco Bay Area. Using proximity as a partial indicator of access, I examined whether urban community farms or gardens are more accessible to low-income households. Survey responses from urban community agriculturalists were used to assess dietary diversity and the cultural influence of crop plantings. I am currently in the process of publishing in a peer review journal, you can find my abstract here.

SJSU Grad Slam Finalist

My thesis work was a finalist in SJSU Grad Slam, a research communication contest where participants have 3-minutes to present their research. The Grad Slam aims to make research accessible by having researchers clearly communicate their work to the public.

Community-Based Research

Veggielution is a community urban farm in San Jose CA. Veggielution plans to add a temporary historical exhibit dedicated to telling the stories of the agriculturalists of the Santa Clara Valley. This research project was a historical review of the under-told stories of farmers of color that were farming the Valley from the 1800s to World War II.
